As we already know that windows has a feature to autorun any removable media whether it is a CD or pen drive whenever it is inserted to the system. Though for some of us it is a good feature which they love to have but still there are many looking for a way how to disable this feature.
So if you are among those want to turn off this feature then here you will definitely find a solution. This is small registry tweak to disable Autorun feature and this method works in almost all Windows versions including XP, Vista and 7.
1. Open Registry Editor (Press Windows +R and type Registry editor and press Enter). It’ll open Registry Editor.
2. Navigate the following key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
may be some of you doesn’t find then you have to create it however it is very unlikely that it won’t exist.
3. Now I hope you have found the key Explorer pan to the right-side area, create a new DWORD value NoDriveTypeAutoRun and set its value to any of following according to your requirements:
FF – To disable AutoRun on all drives
20 – To disable AutoRun on CD-ROM drives
4 – To disable AutoRun on removable drives
8 – To disable AutoRun on fixed drives
10 – To disable AutoRun on network drives
40 – To disable AutoRun on RAM disks
1 – To disable AutoRun on unknown drives
Note you only have to type the bold letters in dword value popup box
4. If you want to disable Autorun on a combination of drives, you’ll need to calculate sum of the values. For example, if you want to disable Autorun on CD-ROM drives and removable drives, you’ll need to set the value to 20+4=24.
So in case if you have applied the settings and now want to disable the above restriction then simple delete the NoDriveTypeAutoRun DWORD value created in Step 3.
PS: If you are not very familiar with Registry and want a ready-made registry script to do the task automatically, simply download following ZIP file, extract it and run the desired REG file. It’ll ask for confirmation, allow it and it will the all the necessary changes itself.
